Norwegian prisons have been the subject of controversy, praise and criticism.

The Norwegian prison system is famous for its focus on rehabilitation. Opponents call it too comfortable and unfairly forgiving criminals. Advocates point to his humanity and the supposed positive effect he has on fighting crime.

No matter what you think of them, Norwegian prisons look atypical – at least compared to the quintessential prison cells as seen on television. Surrounded by metal bars; films and television series show them as places more cage than room, where silence and loneliness (and often terror) reign. In many, if not most, prison systems around the world, such an image is a stark reality.

Norway’s approach, however, is different.

Scroll to see some of Norway’s prisons – and decide for yourself if they’re humane, ridiculous, rehabilitative, luxurious or otherwise.
